• Capeverdean Islands

    Periode: van 01-12-2012 tot 16-02-2013

The islands of Cape Verde are situated in the Atlantic Ocean, over 600 kilometres West of Senegal. Cape Verde consists of 9 inhabited and a few uninhabited islands. The tropical climate and the always-present trade wind make it a true sailing paradise. There is much to see on and around the islands. The water is filled with flying fish, tuna, wahoo, sea turtles and whales. Steep terrace fields with banana and coffee plantations, black volcanic slopes and a fiercely foaming, deep blue sea define the diverse landscape.

The Cape Verde is a part of Africa and cannot be compared with the Caribbean. The islands are more arid, the sea can be rougher and mass tourism has not reached most of the islands yet. The inhabitants are friendly; many of them are very poor. Besides in the bigger cities there are few facilities for tourists, but onboard you will have everything you need

  • Milemaker: Rotterdam - Cape Verde

    Periode: van 03-11-2012 tot 30-11-2012

A milemaker offers you the opportunity to experience the life of a real sailor! You are part of the crew and you participate in the watch system. Together with the crew you will steer and navigate the ship. You will change the sail wardrobe and participate in all the necessary activities for the life onboard. Together you will bring the ship from point A to point B as soon as possible. For instance, to get the ship to a maritime event or the starting point of the summer or winter programs. Of course there will be time for relaxation. There is always a quiet corning in the salon to read a good book, updating your journal, listen to some music or play a game.

A milemaker makes few, or even no, stops and is therefore not suitable as a ‘sight-seeing’ voyage. Depending on the weather it is possible that the duration of the milemaker is two days longer of shorter than expected.  You pay a fixed price for your participation, regardless of the duration.  Depending on the weather conditions the schedule can be altered, but we will always sail as much as possible. People who are less fit, are afraid of getting seasick or are otherwise in less good shape we discourage to participate in these voyages.

  • Saint Malo – Brest

    Periode: van 07-07-2012 tot 12-07-2012

The old Breton city Saint Malo is this year’s host of the Tall Ships races. You can take part in the festivities in town and you will sail along with the ‘Oosterschelde’ to the start of the race. We will follow the Tall Ships for a while in the English Channel and end our voyage in Brest where the event ‘Les Tonnerres de Brest’ is being held. You will get the chance to experience these two events and to be a part of the crew of one of the most beautiful historic three masters in the International fleet.

As soon as you are on board the first mate will show you to your cabin. The festival is in full swing and you have enough time to take a look on the quayside. Dinner will be served on the ship. The next day the ‘Oosterschelde’ will sail in the parade to sea and the starting point. This is far away from shore and the start of the race will be the next morning. We will watch the start of the ships and we will follow them towards Biscay. We are not in a rush, so we will bring a visit to ‘L Abervrach’ or another town.

During this voyage you will be a member of the crew. Everyone is divided in to groups to take part in the watch system. During these periods of watch we will ask you to participate as much as possible with navigation and all the basic sailing proceedings. The crew will try to learn you as much as possible about sailing with a three master and during the voyage you will quickly become comfortable with the basics. For the enthusiasts the crew is happy to explain more about navigation, the functions of all the ropes, halyards and sheets. After watch there is enough room and time to play a game, read a book or watch the horizon and waves. The ‘Oosterschelde’ offers you the opportunity to experience your voyage in your own way. The festival in Brest is famous for it’s dynamics. Tens, maybe hundreds of big and small boats will gather in the sheltered bay. You will get the chance to walk over the quayside before it is time to say goodbye.

  • Rotterdam – Saint-Malo

    Periode: van 28-06-2012 tot 06-07-2012

From Rotterdam, the homeport of the ‘Oosterschelde’, we sail trough the Straight of Dover to the English Channel. Here we enjoy the space, the rough nature and the picturesque harbours around the Channel Islands before we moor in the old Breton town Saint-Malo. Together with the ‘Oosterschelde’ a lot of other Tall ships will arrive in Saint Malo for the Maritime festival.

The captain will welcome all the guests onboard. The chef will serve a light meal and during dinner the crew will explain more about the ship, (safety)rules, standing guard, etc. We will turn in early, so that everyone is fit for the early departure at daybreak. On the ‘Nieuwe Waterweg’ we set sail and when we are at sea we will course in south-western direction. Everyone is divided in to groups to take part in the watch system. During these periods of watch we will ask you to participate as much as possible with navigation and all the basic sailing proceedings.

After about two full days we will arrive at the Channel Islands. Here we will take the time to visit a small town, to drop anchor at an Island or to sail on very spectacular fast flowing water. Our route will depend on the wind and weather forecast. Every day our captain or first mate will discuss the possibilities with the guest crew. In the early morning on the 5th of July we will arrive in Saint-Malo. The old centre of the city is still surrounded by a town wall and is definitely worth a visit. The Tall Ships’ will moor in the basins. If you are interested in these ships, this will be your opportunity to visit them and to take part in the festivities on the quayside. On the morning of Friday the 6th of July it’s time to say goodbye after breakfast.

  • Milemaker Kiel-Rotterdam

    Periode: van 24-06-2012 tot 28-06-2012

On Sunday June 24th we expect you onboard around 20:00 hours. The ‘Oosterschelde’ is moored at the Sartorikai in Kiel, on walking distance from Central Station. The captain will welcome all guests onboard. As soon as everybody is onboard, he will explain all the (safety) rules onboard and will go through the plans for the voyage. We will depart that evening and sail via the Kiel Fjord to the locks of Holtenau, where we will spend the night. Early next morning we will go trough the locks to the ‘Nord-Ostsee Kanal’. There is a lot to see on the channel, for example the impressive bridges and the big seagoing vessels that we come across or pass us by. During the period on the channel we give you instructions on the rigging and about sailing with a three-masted topsail schooner. As soon as we are at Brünsbuttel we set sail on the Elbe. With all the big vessels around us it is very adventurous to sail on this fast flowing river. We hope for a high-pressure area with an easterly wind, so we can sail the whole voyage. After Helgoland we pass the German and Dutch coastal islands north and sail to Texel. There we change course to southwest and on Wednesday night we will arrive in the homeport of the ‘Oosterschelde’; the Veerhaven. When family or friends come to pick you up the next morning, they can join us for a cup of coffee and you can show them around on the ship.

  • Kiel voyage

    Periode: van 11-06-2012 tot 15-06-2012

Each year the Oosterschelde sails to Kiel for the maritime event the Kiel Week. From the Netherlands you can sail along on this short but exciting voyage. We sail past the Dutch and German coastal islands. We make a short stop on Helgoland, an island in the North Sea. Helgoland is known by nature and bird lovers, because it is an important breeding ground for the Guillemot, the Kittiwake and the Northern Gannet. We sail via the Elbe to the Nord-Ostsee Kanal. Through the sluices at Holtenau we arrive in the Kielerfjord where we will sail the last part to Kiel.

Underway there is much traffic on the water, what makes it more adventurous. The many bridges we pass are also very remarkable. For example the Eisenbahnhochbrücke, which has been designed by Dr. H.C. Friedrich Voss, as have all the bridges on the canal.

  • Special theme voyage ‘father and son’ (Whitsun weekend)

    Periode: van 25-05-2012 tot 28-05-2012

Do you know the feeling that you are always too busy and would like to spend more time with your son? And if you have the time, he is too busy and has other priorities. Or the other way around, you would like to spend more time with your father. But there is never enough time. Especially for you, we have planned a ‘father and son’ voyage, for fathers and sons of all ages. A long weekend at sea (during Whitsun), with a stop somewhere along the east coast of England, gives you time to have a good talk while enjoying the sea and the wind.

    Description of the voyage
During this three-days sailing voyage, we set sail to the east coast of England. On Friday the 25th of May we expect you onboard between 20:00 and 21:00 hours. The crew will welcome you and show you around on the ship. As soon as everyone is onboard, we will leave Rotterdam. The captain will explain all the (safety) rules and will go through the plans for the voyage. In Maassluis we will stop for a few hours to get some sleep. Early next morning we will continue our journey. Crew and guest crew will set sail and we head westward for the English coast. The crossover will take (of course dependant on the wind) approximately a full day. Weather, wind and the captain will decide where, when and how long we will stop. Possible destinations are Great Yarmouth, Pinmill, Lowestoft or Ipswich. From there the choice is yours: a long walk, a visit to a museum or a pint in the local pub… the English coast offers many possibilities!

The North Sea is one of the busiest seas in the world. This makes a voyage like this very interesting. There are many ships around us and there is a lot of work to be done on deck. All guests will take part in the watch system and we ask everyone to participate in navigation, sail handling, lookout, etc. The watch on duty has to be on his or her spot to make a tack or jibe possible as a give-way manoeuvre. On Monday 28th, we will be back in Rotterdam in the late afternoon. If family or friends will pick you up, they are more than welcome on board for coffee. Meanwhile it will be possible for you to show them around.

  • North Sea

    Periode: van 17-05-2012 tot 20-05-2012

During this four-day sailing voyage, we set sail to the east coast of England. In all circumstances this short trip is a good way to relax and enjoy a few careless days on board. This weekend is nice for regular Oosterschelde guests, but also a very nice opportunity to be introduced with the ship and to test whether a longer trip would be something you would enjoy. On Thursday the 17th of May we expect you onboard in the morning in Rotterdam.

We would like to leave shortly after an introduction to the ship, the crew members and the other guest crew members. The captain will explain all the (safety) rules and will go through the plans for the voyage. Across the ‘Nieuwe Waterweg’ we sail towards the sea. Crew and guest crew will set sail and we head westward for the English coast. The next day we will visit another village before making the crossover back to Rotterdam.

The North Sea is one of the busiest seas in the world. This makes a voyage like this very interesting. There are many ships around us and there is a lot of work to be done on deck. All guests will take part in the watch system and we ask everyone to participate in navigation, sail handling, lookout, etc. The watch on duty has to be on its spot to make a tack or jibe possible as a give-way manoeuvre. On Sunday the 20th, we will be back in Rotterdam in the late afternoon. If family or friends will pick you up, they are more than welcome on board for coffee. • London Voyage - London (UK)-Vlissingen (NL)

    Periode: van 07-05-2012 tot 07-05-2013

During this four-days sailing voyage, we will see London from another point of view, from the Thames. After that we will make a crossover to the coast of The Netherlands, Vlissingen. You will get on board in Tilbury, one of the suburbs of London. The crew will welcome you and show you around the ship. As soon as everyone is onboard, we will leave. The captain will explain all the (safety) rules and will go through the plans of the voyage. On the first day we will sail upstream on the Thames and see many famous buildings and bridges from the water. Sailing on the Thames is very unusual, since you need special certificates to sail on the Thames without a professional pilot. And the ‘Oosterschelde’ has got all certificates.

At the end of the day, we moor in Woolwich. The next morning we leave for the trip on river Thames towards sea. The Thames is a tidal river with heavy tidal differences and stream. Therefore we need to leave on an outgoing tide. In the evening we will be on broader waters at the Thames estuary. Based on the weather the captain decides which place we will moor or anchor.

Wednesday we will make the ocean crossing. We usually need around a full day (24 hours) at sea. Thursday afternoon we sail into the ‘Westerschelde’ and go through the locks of Vlissingen. Around 4:30 PM we will arrive in the harbour of Vlissingen. If family or friends will pick you up, they are more than welcome on board for coffee. Meanwhile it will be possible for you to show them around. Around 5 PM we will say goodbye.

Embark: Monday August 13 – 12 AM, Tilbury (London, UK)
Disembark: Thursday August 16 – 5PM, Vlissingen (NL)

As soon as we are at sea we will divide our guest crew into watches, and you will all be keeping watch in periods of four hours. You will soon get used to the basics of sailing and navigation. For the enthusiastic ones, the crew is happy to explain more about navigation, the function of all the ropes, halyards and sheets. After watch there is enough room and time to play a game, read a book or watch the horizon and waves. The ‘Oosterschelde’ offers you the opportunity to experience your voyage in your own way.

Our destination offers many possibilities for a visiting small town, to drop anchor at an island and to sail on spectacularly flowing water. Where we will go exactly, depends on the direction of the wind and the weather forecast. Every day the captain or first mate will discuss the possibilities with the guest crew. On our first day we will sail through the night to Alderney or Cherbourg. Once we are in the area of our destination there is plenty of time to visit a nice town, to make a long walk or to visit a local pub on one of the evenings. We probably need around two days for our way back. If the wind is favourable, we can make a stop at Fécamp, Boulogne or Dover before we arrive in Rotterdam. Family or friends that come to pick you up can drink a cup of coffee on board and you can show them around on the ship.

  • Spitzbergen

    Periode: van 10-09-2011 tot 30-09-2011

Spitzbergen is one of the last true wildernesses of Europe. It has a rugged fjord coast, high mountains with snow-covered tops and immense glaciers. In the past the inhabitants lived of whale fishing. Hundreds of ships from Holland visited the waters around Spitzbergen. The many Dutch names, the still visible remainders of the tear-ovens and the hundreds of graves remind us of these times. Plant life is scarce, but very special. On the rocks and cliffs we find enormous breading colonies of seabirds. On land live mammals such as Arctic foxes, reindeers and Polar bears and in the sea we find seals, walruses and many different kinds of whales.

The accent of the voyages will lie on exploring the area. We will go ashore, with the use of dinghies, on a daily basis. An experienced nature guide will accompany you at all times. They will point out the special plants and animals, geological characteristics and historical sights. While ashore, the guides are armed as a precaution for encounters with Polar bears. We therefore advise you to stay with the group the entire time during the walks.

During the voyage much time will be spent sailing and you will explicitly be invited to participate. There will be enough time to go ashore and explore the landscape and local culture. Those who want to can even try to catch a fish while we are anchored. We will not have guides onboard, but our crew will organise and excursion or walk ashore on a regular basis.

    Periode: van 30-11-2010 tot 21-04-2011

This winter of 2010, the Europa will sail for the ninth time in the Southern waters. Five 22-day expeditions to the Antarctic Peninsula are scheduled. Voyages for the sailing and bird lovers, for photographers, artists or just nature admirers. The expeditions will start from Ushuaia in Argentina. This most southern city in South America is located alongside the Beagle Channel. From here, the famous 'Drake Passage' has to be crossed. On the way albatrosses and storm birds will accompany the ship to the Antarctic paradise. After passing the Antarctic convergention zone, the ship sails between the icebergs to the South Shetland Islands. The animal life is overwhelming. Sea lions, seals, gulls, cormorants and petrels use the summer in Antarctica to raise their young.
In the Antarctic waters, the bark Europa will anchor in sheltered bays every day. The crew will bring groups ashore in the dinghies to see glaciers, mosses and lichens, seals, birds and penguin colonies. Visitors on shore will often be welcomed by thousands of different kinds of penguins. A professional guide will give information about the flora and fauna. He will explain for example where to find bird and sea elephant colonies and he will give advice about what to do to not disturb the unspoiled scenery.
The ship will sail further south. Whales, the most loyal visitor of the Southern Ocean will visit the EUROPA. On former voyages many humpback whales, mink whales and even orca’s, came curious swimming alongside the ship. The ice masses will get bigger more close to the mainland. Steep glaciers, walls of ice with magical shapes and surreal colours will surround the Europa with floating growlers where the leopard seals live on.
The last day of the voyage the ship will sail in between the chaos of islands in Tierra del Fuego. The green fjords are a significant change to the white and blue of Antarctica. These fjords are rough and populated with Magellan penguins, sea lions and rock cormorants.
